SOLUTIONS

Reduce weight

Compare the total assembly, not just a material density. Geometry, integration and transport requirements determine whether a lighter design is useful.

A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

Define what a better result means.

Start by documenting the existing design, the specific problem and how an improvement will be measured. Include operating conditions, assembly constraints and the intended service life.

Questions to bring to the conversation

  • What is the application, and which requirements are essential?
  • How will the finished component be manufactured and assembled?
  • Which conditions should be represented in testing?
  • What happens at the end of the useful service life?

Any performance, food-contact or environmental claim needs evidence for the specific grade and application. Agree the validation and documentation requirements before selecting a final design.

Look beyond density

Review ribs, wall thickness, contact points and opportunities to integrate multiple functions. A lighter raw material is only useful when the finished design meets the load case.

Include the packaging journey

Compare protection, packed volume and handling effort alongside material quantity. Keep the same test conditions when assessing alternative pack layouts.

Validate the trade-off

Record weight, dimensional fit and functional results on representative samples. Use these findings to decide whether the change supports the actual product and logistics requirements.
