SOLUTIONS

Reduce environmental impact

Document material use, reuse assumptions and transport distances. Environmental comparisons need a defined boundary and credible data.

A PRACTICAL STARTING POINT

Define what a better result means.

Start by documenting the existing design, the specific problem and how an improvement will be measured. Include operating conditions, assembly constraints and the intended service life.

Questions to bring to the conversation

  • What is the application, and which requirements are essential?
  • How will the finished component be manufactured and assembled?
  • Which conditions should be represented in testing?
  • What happens at the end of the useful service life?

Any performance, food-contact or environmental claim needs evidence for the specific grade and application. Agree the validation and documentation requirements before selecting a final design.

Set a comparable boundary

Identify production, shipment, use and after-use stages included in the comparison. State quantities and assumptions so alternatives can be assessed consistently.

Test circular design options

Explore less material, a recoverable material combination or a return loop with the project requirements in view. Ask for feedstock traceability and declared content.

Use evidence for claims

Measure material use, reuse cycles, losses and return transport for the project. Base environmental statements on those results, with clear assumptions and supporting documentation.
